Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who celebrated his 101st birthday in July, has lived through more than a century of political upheavals, social transformations, and global crises.

Yet even with all that experience behind him, he now appears confounded by the strange and unsettling state of affairs unfolding both at home and around the world.
