Sarawak PKR chief Larry Sng has stepped down from his state party's top post, saying that he believes it should be headed by a Dayak leader before next year's state election.The Julau MP said this is because the population of the state has a Dayak majority, but the group is under-represented in main leadership roles."After much consideration, I have decided that it is in the best interest of Sarawak PKR (for it) to be led by a Dayak leader, going into the Sarawak state election."The majority of Sarawakians are Dayaks, representing 43 percent of the population, with Malay and Chinese representation at only 24 percent. "Yet we find that the poorest and most undeveloped areas in our state are within rural Dayak constituencies," Sng said in a statement on Facebook.

				</div>He added that the community lacks representation in the top roles of both government and opposition parties."Party presidents/chairpersons from PBB, PDP, SUPP, PKR, DAP, PSB, PBK and Amanah are either Malay or Chinese, despite the parties being largely supported by Dayaks."I believe that by making this change within Sarawak PKR’s leadership, it would augur well and lend the party more credibility in its fight against economic inequalities in the private sector, inequalities in selection and promotion in the public service and our resolve in addressing native customary land issues," Sng said."Even though I was elected in a predominantly Dayak parliamentary seat and have state administration experience, I am confident that the party will find a good replacement," he added.&nbsp;Sng took aim at Sarawak PKR MPs who defected, saying that if they had remained loyal, Pakatan Harapan would still be in the federal government."We should not take the past defection of our former MPs from Puncak Borneo, Saratok, Lubok Antu and Selangau as a case against Dayak leadership in Sarawak PKR. "It is sad to say that, had they remained with us, Harapan would still be in government today."The sins of the few should not rest on the shoulders of the many, and I am confident that the people will vote Sarawak PKR back to represent them in those areas which we lost," he added.To ensure a smooth transition and the selection of his replacement, Sng said he would discuss the matter with PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.<div class="medium-insert-images"><figure><img src="https://icf.newscdn.net/publisher-c1a3f893382d2b2f8a9aa22a654d9c97/2020/02/3dde390c790072d472b5e33bb0ce4165.jpg" alt=""></figure></div>Sarawak PKR Women's chief Agnes Padan said that she respected Sng's decision."It is difficult for me to accept but I respect his decision. "But as a Sarawakian, I hope that we should stay away from race-based politics," Agnes said when contacted today.&nbsp;The son of multi-millionaire businessperson-politician Sng Chee Hua, Sng first stood on the Parti Bangsa Dayak Sarawak ticket in the 2001 state election, replacing his father as the Pelagus representative. He served two terms as BN's Pelagus assemblyperson, from 2001 to 2011, and was appointed an assistant minister under then chief minister Abdul Taib Mahmud in 2004. He later represented Parti Rakyat Sarawak and Sarawak Workers Party before joining PKR after winning Julau as an independent in the 2018 general election. Sng was appointed Sarawak PKR chairperson last March.The previous Sarawak state election was held in May 2016 and as such, an election must be called in 2021.
